Want to Learn How to Play the Acoustic Guitar?

Do you remember the first time you knew you wanted to learn how to play acoustic guitar.  Mine was one day at my uncle’s house when he decided to break out his guitar and entertain the family.  There is nothing like the sound of an acoustic guitar and that moment was all it took to convince me to learn to play acoustic guitar.

If you also want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar then you will soon discover that there is a bit more to it than you might have initially realized.  For starters, you have to decide what type of acoustic guitar lesson you want to learn from.  Most will choose to learn acoustic guitar from an instructor with one on one lesson with an instructor but some will also choose a self-study course or online lessons.  Any of these methods is good as long as you choose to stick with it and not give up too easily.

You might also need to choose and purchase a guitar to take to your acoustic guitar lesson and practice with.  You don’t need to spend a lot on a new guitar at this point.  It is best to choose a guitar in the $200 range rather than spending thousands at this point.  You can always upgrade a bit later after learning how to play the acoustic guitar a bit better.  By then you may decide you want an electric guitar instead.  Guitars tend to keep their value rather well so you can always choose to trade in your guitar later for whatever you want once you have learned how to play the acoustic guitar first.

Before going to your first acoustic guitar lesson you will also want to make sure you have a good set of strings on the guitar, that the guitar is properly set up, and that it is in tune and ready to play.  This will make your first lesson go much more smoothly and avoid wasting a lot of time with the instructor.  After all, you are there to learn to play acoustic guitar, not to just get your guitar working to begin with.  If you are uncomfortable changing strings or making adjustments on your guitar, you can always take it to a local guitar shop or have it checked out when you first purchase it.

While learning how to play acoustic guitar can definitely be a daunting task to face, it is also a very attainable goal with the right guitar instruction and a bit of time and dedication.  If you put in a lot of effort you will be playing the guitar in no time at all and will be well on your way to guitar mastery.

What are good acoustic guitar strings for a Martin acoustic guitar?

I’m buying a Martin OM-1E in two weeks. What type of strings are good for this type of guitar? I’ve primarily played electric up until now, so I’m not familiar with acoustic guitar string types. I’m looking for a dynamic, responsive type of tone for finger picking, however, I also need the strings to give a full sound when I’m strumming. Any brands or gauges you recommend?
